MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) — Marc Mariani scored his third touchdown of the game on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Selle with 1:08 to play Saturday to cap a 27-point second-half comeback and give top-seeded Montana a 61-48 victory over South Dakota State in the first round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.
Severin Campbell returned an interception 32 yards for a touchdown with 45 seconds to play to ice the victory for the Grizzlies (12-0). South Dakota State finishes with an 8-4 record.
After turning the ball over four times in the first half and having a punt blocked and recovered for a touchdown in the end zone, Montana trailed 48-21 with 5:40 remaining in the third quarter. But the Grizzlies scored six unanswered touchdowns to steal the victory from the Jackrabbits.
Mariani caught 12 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns, and returned a kickoff 98 yards for another score. Chase Reynolds added three rushing touchdowns for Montana.
Stephen F. Austin 44 E. Washington 33
NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Jeremy Moses' 432-passing yards helped lead Stephen F. Austin in a shootout. The Lumberjacks (10-2) led 30-12 at the half and by as many as 25 in the game. The two teams combined for 1,158 total yards, with 893 of them coming in the passing game.
Moses was 43 for 57 (75.4 percent) with four touchdown passes and three interceptions.
Matt Nichols was 43 for 76 (56.5 percent) for 461 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for the Eagles (8-4). Taiwan Jones had 118 rushing yards and a touchdown.
William & Mary 38, Weber State 0
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — R.J. Archer ran for two scores and William & Mary returned two interceptions for touchdowns. The Tribe (10-2) intercepted four passes while holding the Wildcats (7-5) to 161 yards total offense.
Jake Trantin gave the Tribe a 7-0 lead by intercepting a Cameron Higgins pass and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. B.W. Webb returned an interception 58 yards for a touchdown and the Tribe led 17-0 at halftime. Higgins went 21-for-40 passing for 167 yards for the Wildcats.
Appalachian St. 20 South Carolina St. 13
BOONE, N.C. — Dominique McDuffie returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Tied at 13-13, South Carolina State went for it on fourth-and-1 from Appalachian State's 15-yard line. But the Bulldogs fumbled, McDuffie recovered and returned it for the winning score with 7:42 left to play.
Richmond 16, Elon 13
RICHMOND, Va. — Eric Warad threw for 140 yards and rushed for a career-high 136 yards and Elon's Adam Schreiner missed a pair of field goals in the final 1:30.
The Phoenix moved to Richmond's 31 with 7 second left before Shreiner's 47-yard attempt was short.
New Hampshire 49 McNeese State 13
LAKE CHARLES, La. — R.J. Toman threw three touchdowns and rushed for a score to lead New Hampshire.
Toman, who went 17-for-25, threw for 240 yards. The quarterback scored on a 1-yard run to give New Hampshire a 14-3 lead in the first quarter.
Villanova 38, Holy Cross 28
VILLANOVA, Pa. — Chris Whitney threw one touchdown and broke a 14-all tie with a 1-yard run in the second quater.
Whitney threw for 239 yards, including a 29-yard TD pass, and rushed for 62 yards. Dominic Randolph threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns for Holy Cross.
Southern Illinois 48 Eastern Illinois 7
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Quarterback Paul McIntosh rushed for 155 yards and threw for 66 more and two touchdowns, and Southern Illinois churned out 323 rushing yards in a rout.
