The Flagstaff Community Foundation completed its annual grant-making process Friday, Nov. 6, by handing over checks totaling more than $600,000 to 100 local nonprofit organizations.
This year, 117 nonprofits applied for funding in the areas of Health Care, Victim Services, Youth, Social Services, Environmental Education, Music Education and Arts & Culture. Of the 117 applicants, 100 were funded and 43 were fully funded at the amount they requested, according to a FCF press release.
Despite the most challenging economy since the Great Depression, foundation volunteers, donors and staff, along with nine collaborating groups — the 1701 Fund, the Elliott Family Fund, the Ernest and Evelyn Chilson Foundation, Flagstaff Medical Center, Flagstaff P-12 Educational Fund, Forest Highlands Foundation, GeoFund, McClanahan Family Fund and the Stone Soup Fund — increased the funding from $425,000 last year, to slightly more than $600,00 this year.
"In a year when most nonprofit organizations are experiencing the effects of the financial downturn, we were able to take advantage of the power of endowed funds, along with the commitment and generosity of our collaborators and donors," Ken Lamm, grants chair, told guests during the presentation. "This year, we stand on the shoulders of visionaries in our community who established this foundation knowing that funding to nonprofits would be provided even in difficult times like we are experiencing now."
Approximately 160 people attended the presentation, including representatives from the City Council, collaborators, Grants Committee members and donors. Prior to the event, musicians from the Flagstaff Symphony Orchestra welcomed the attendees as they entered the main gallery of the Coconino Center of the Arts.
Founded in 1987 as an affiliate of the Arizona Community Foundations, the Flagstaff Community Foundation is a permanent philanthropic endowment which currently manages 49 funds, totaling more than $12 million in assets.
FCF secures, manages and allocates donors' gifts for charitable purposes in the Flagstaff area while working to improve the quality of life for local residents, according to FCF sources.
