Prep Sports Roundup: Flag High girls bounce back
One night after losing its season opener, Flagstaff High responded on the road with a 64-51 win at Avondale Agua Fria on Wednesday night.
The Eagles were led by sophomore point guard Ileana Johnson, who had a game-high 25 points. She also added eight rebounds and seven steals in the win. Sophomore Kia Sandoval chipped in with 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, and senior Stephanie Ryan added 12.
Flagstaff High was able to break the game open in the second quarter. The Eagles went into the frame leading by three and erupted for 23 points. The Eagles hit five 3-pointers in the quarter, lead by Johnson, who had three.
The Eagles went 25-for-34 from the free throw line in the win.
"We still have a long way to go, but it was nice to see the team come out relaxed, patient and work together. It was definitely a better effort than (Tuesday)," Eagles coach Tyrone Johnson said. "The girls played aggressive tonight and we were able to pull away in the second quarter when we hit all of those threes."
The Eagles will return to action tonight at 5:30 p.m. against Buckeye. The game will be played at Sinagua, as the Flagstaff High gym prepares to host a wrestling tournament this weekend.

Page opened the Deer Valley tournament Wednesday with two losses by shutout.
The Sand Devils played host Deer Valley to a scoreless tie at halftime, but surrendered a goal on a penalty kick and then things began to snowball, coach Paul Gagnon said.
The Sand Devils have yet to score this season and have given up 12 goals in three matches.
"It's like there is a shield in front of the goal," Gagnon said. "We just can't seem to get it in. We had some opportunities, but we would dink it to the goalie or something. We don't have a whole lot of experience, but once that comes along, it'll be fun to see. We've got to remain positive and view it as a learning experience."
Page meets Glendale Sandra Day O'Connor at 4 p.m. today.
