Lockett Meadow camping closed; day-use still open

The campground near the Inner Basin of the San Francisco Peaks closed on Friday, due to the possibility of dead aspens falling on campers.

There are more than 150 dead aspen in the Lockett Meadow Campground and Coconino National Forest recreation staff said forecasted high winds could blow down the dead trees, which could fall on campers. The area is still open for hikers and daytime visitors.

High-clearance vehicles are currently recommended on the road leading to Lockett Meadow, Forest Road 522, due to road conditions.

" How come we don't see any acknowledgment of the blight that is killing Aspens in the West? It's been spreading from the East for several years now.

Will it hurt tourism if it's discussed? "
