Park Service considering more trains at canyon
The National Park Service is considering allowing a third train trip from Williams to the Grand Canyon daily, up from two trips per summer day now by Xanterra Parks and Resorts, which owns the Grand Canyon Railway.
An evening train could also take passengers 14 miles from the Grand Canyon and return. The Park Service is considering adding more trains to reduce vehicle traffic into the park, in addition to shuttle buses now operating from Tusayan. Light rail was once proposed to ease traffic at the South Rim, but has been shelved due to cost.
In 2007, 5.1 percent of the 4.5 million visitors to the South Rim arrived via train, according to the Park Service.
The public can comment on this proposal by going to http://parkplanning.nps.gov/grca or sending mail to: Superintendent, Grand Canyon National Park, Attn: Office of Compliance and Planning, P.O. Box 129, Grand Canyon, AZ 86023 by Oct. 4.
