Incumbent lawmaker loses in GOP primary

PAGE -- Trish Groe, the two-term Republican state legislator arrested on DUI charges last year, came up short in the Republican primary for the state House of Representatives in Legislative District 3 Tuesday.

Two years after receiving the highest vote total in her party's primary of four candidates, Groe finished third with just 28.2 percent of the vote in unofficial results. The district extends from Page southwestward through Mohave County. Groe, of Lake Havasu City, was arrested last March after reportedly registering a blood alcohol content between .148 and .158 percent while driving home from Phoenix.

She was sentenced to 210 days in jail and fined nearly $3,000 in December after pleading guilty to misdemeanor DUI. In September a La Paz County grand jury returned a charge of aggravated DUI and a count of false reporting.

"It's been an awesome experience serving in the state Legislature," Groe told the Lake Havasu News-Herald Tuesday night. "I will now pass the torch."

Groe said she hopes to continue to carry her message of "hope and light" to those suffering with drug and alcohol addiction.

Another two-term Republican incumbent, Nancy McLain, polled 38.2 percent of the vote. Challenger Doris Goodale of Kingman had 33.6 percent, earning a place on the Nov. 4 ballot with McLain.

The only Democratic candidate was Pam Durbin of Lake Havasu City. She will face off against Goodale and McLain in November, with the two House seats going to the two top vote- getters.

"I wish Nancy the best," Groe said. "She has worked hard for this district. I hope Doris continues as a conservative leader for our district. I'll just see what my Heavenly father wants me to do."

In the District 3 Senate race, both incumbent Republican Ron Gould of Lake Havasu City and Democratic challenger Mary Landahl of Marble Canyon were unopposed.

Landahl is trying to become the Page area's first candidate to earn election to the Legislature. Three others have failed in House bids in the past 10 years.

No. You are not passing the torch. The torch was taken away from you.

"I wish Nancy the best," Groe said. "She has worked hard for this district. I hope Doris continues as a conservative leader for our district. I'll just see what my Heavenly father wants me to do."

Is anyone else sick unto death of people wearing their faith on their sleeve? Have any of these so-called 'pious' faith-bearers heard of the separation of church and state? Do they realize that, when taking office, religion is to be left at the door? Have they read the Constitution? Do they have any idea that their rhetoric renders them unAmerican? not unreligious, unAmerican? "

" As a fairly new resident of La Paz county (two years) (which is also in the 3rd) I was ashamed of both Trish Groe and the County Attorney for the way they both handled the DUI situation.
Neither one received my vote. For their actions they don’t deserve to be reelected.
