Crews start fuel-break project off Townsend-Winona Road

Crews from the Coconino National Forest and Flagstaff, Summit, Highland and Pinewood fire departments are creating a fuel break around the neighborhoods at the southwest corner of Townsend-Winona Road and Cosnino Road.

Vegetation in the area and northern Arizona's prevailing winds blowing from the southwest create a unique fire threat for the neighborhood. Crews will clear dense vegetation to create a fuel break to reduce fire risk. The project is a component of the forest's Eastside Fuels Reduction Project. It calls for crews to clear the vegetation from a 300-foot strip of land adjacent to the private property.

Crews began work Wednesday and will continue intermittently throughout the next few months.

For more information about this and other Coconino National Forest fuels treatment projects, visit the Web site at www.fs.fed.us/conditions or call the Peaks Ranger District at (928) 526-0866.
