Woman falls at South Rim
GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK (AP) -- A woman visiting the Grand Canyon Sunday lost her footing and fell over the edge, sustaining serious injuries.
The National Park Service says the woman had reportedly approached the edge of the canyon to take a picture and lost her footing when she turned to return to the trail. Rescue personnel located her approximately 25 to 30 feet below the South Rim about 300 yards west of Mather Point.
Emergency personnel rappelled over the edge and assessed her injuries.
The park service say she suffered a broken left leg.
Rescuers stabilized her leg and placed her in a litter so that she could be safely raised to the rim of the canyon using a rope system.
The woman was then take by ambulance to Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff.
