Astronomy Day at Lowell Observatory today

Today is National Astronomy Day, and Lowell Observatory will celebrate by offering specials tours, programs, telescope viewing and prize giveaways.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Lowell will offer expanded historic tours, space theater programs and the "Cosmic Cart," which incorporates science demonstrations to illustrate conditions in space. Then, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the observatory will be open for evening activities. Visitors can view Saturn through the historic 24-inch Clark Telescope (weather permitting). Other telescopes will be focused on a variety of other celestial objects.

At 7 p.m., Lowell docent and longtime amateur astronomer Howard Israel will give an indoor presentation, "Myths and Legends of the Sky."

Throughout the day and evening, visitors can register to win prizes, including a Meade ETX 80AT-TC telescope and three one-year subscriptions to Astronomy magazine. The prize drawing will take place immediately at about 7:45 p.m. All entrants will also be automatically entered to win a Meade 8-inch LX-90 telescope, which will be awarded at a later time by Meade Instruments 4M Community.

Admission is $6 adult; $3 ages 5-17; $5 student/senior/AAA. Lowell Observatory is located at 1400 W. Mars Hill Road. For more information, visit www.lowell.edu.
