Flagstaff Mall and The Marketplace is joining its 72 sister shopping centers across the country today to create more than 30,000 wellness bags for women cancer patients nationwide in a single-day "Step Out Step Up" event.
Women volunteers are needed in Flagstaff to help create 200 wellness bags which will be distributed to female cancer patients through the Cancer Center at Flagstaff Medical Center.
Volunteers will be provided refreshments and entertainment by Flagstaff Mall and The Marketplace. Volunteers can also enjoy complimentary activities such as: Hair styling provided by JCPenney Salon; Health education provided by Flagstaff Medical Center; Makeovers provided by Clinique and Estee Lauder courtesy of Dillard's; Chair massages provided by Massage Envy; Polish changes provided by Red 115 Aveda Salon.
Volunteers are needed tonight from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Flagstaff Mall Food Court. For more information, call 526-0940.
Mail carriers collecting food
The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the U.S. Postal Service, will be collecting non-perishable food items like canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice on Saturday to help families in need in our community.
To participate, place a food donation at your mailbox on Saturday before your letter carrier arrives. It will be taken to the post office and then delivered to Northern Arizona Food Bank and St. Mary's Food Bank in Flagstaff. Do not include items that have expired or those in glass containers.
Volunteers are also needed to help with this event. Call Northern Arizona Food Bank at 526-2211, or St. Mary's Food Bank at 779-7066 if you'd like to volunteer for this event in Flagstaff.
Mother's Day March Saturday
The entire community is invited to participate in the fifth annual Mother's Day March on Saturday in downtown Flagstaff.
Mother's Day was originally created as a call to action for women to speak out against the Civil War. Organizers say Saturday's march is an attempt at reclaiming the holiday to celebrate peace and inspire local activism.
The march begins at 11 a.m. at Heritage Square with the reading of the original Mother's Day Proclamation written in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe. The proclamation begins "Arise, then, women of this day. Arise all women who have hearts whether our baptism be that of water or of fears."
The march will proceed around City Hall, returning to Heritage Square. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes, carry signs, blow bubbles and even walk on stilts if so inclined.
