FHS nabs road win

For the first few innings the softball game between Flagstaff High and Coconino looked like it would be a close one.

But that all changed in the fifth inning. FHS scored its first run in the top of that frame, then went on to win 7-0 over the host Panthers on Monday.

"We just wanted to go out and hit the ball hard," FHS coach Ernie Rice said. "Fortunately we were able to make some things happen today."

In the top of the fifth with one out, FHS's Cami Clawson doubled to left center. The next batter and lead-off Krissy Barrett reached on an error from a no catch at first to score Clawson.

Clawson went 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch.

"Cami had a breakout game today," Rice said. "She came out and hit the ball hard twice. She just set back and took her pitch."

Flagstaff (15-10 overall, 4-1 Grand Canyon Region) then scored three runs in each of the final two innings for the win.

"It was a good game because it was 1-0 at the top of the sixth," said CHS coach John Orr, whose team dropped to 12-10 overall and 2-3 in league play. "The difference was we pretty much had a defensive meltdown in the top of the sixth."

It didn't help the Panthers that FHS pitcher Cristin Martin (10-5) was on fire. She struck out 16 and nine of the final 10 batters of the game.

She allowed just two hits.

The closest that Coconino would get to scoring was in the bottom of the fourth when second baseman Stephanie Booth got one of the two hits, a line-drive single up the middle. Eva Sandoval sacrifice bunted Booth over.

But the next two batters struck out and grounded out to leave Booth stranded at second.

Booth was solid at second making several plays to first.

CHS right fielder Danielle Singer as well as pitcher Heidi Moen made clutch fly ball catches as well.

Moen (10-6) struck out four with no walks and 10 hits.

Brittany Garduno had the other hit for Coconino. In the second inning she singled to shallow right.

Martin led off the sixth with a double to dead center. Blythe DeMello was hit by a pitch to get runners on the corners.

While Cassi Jones was up to bat Martin stole home on a passed ball. Martin went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Jones sac bunted DeMello over then Melissa Barrett singled to right for the RBI.

One batter later, Clawson got her second hit, another double to center, and scored Melissa Barrett.

"We didn't compete like I thought we would in the last few innings," Orr said. "All we can do is go back to the drawing board and work hard the next few days."

DeMello and Jones each went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
