Free oil changes in exchange for toys
Flagstaff Auto Repair and Flagstaff Auto Repair Too, a Flagstaff-based company that provides auto repair services, is offering to donate a free oil change service to anyone who brings in a toy for the Marines "Toys for Tots" program. The program will run until Dec. 21. "For the second year in a row, we have worked to help the Marines with this worthwhile program," said Howard and Laini DeVore, owners of the two repair facilities. "Too often people forget that there are children right here in our community that need a little help ... We have decided to dedicate our time and resources to this worthy cause."
Last year the couple gathered hundreds of toys for children in need.
"We filled that box eight times," Howard DeVore said. "It was real cool. The guy who picked it up was almost in tears. He said we did the best for an independent collection site."
The DeVores said they are working this year to make the collection even more successful than last year.
"The Flagstaff community has been very good to us," they said. "This is simply a way to give back to the community."
The toys must be in the original packaging and unwrapped (minimum value, $10). Appointments are necessary. People wanting to take advantage of this special should call or stop by at either store during normal business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Diesels and synthetic fluids are extra.
For more information, call Howard or Laini DeVore at 526-9159 or 226-0998.
Anna McDonald turns 90
Mrs. Anna C. McDonald, longtime resident of Cottonwood, recently celebrated her 90th birthday with her husband, Don J. McDonald, and all their children at their home in Cottonwood.
Anna and Don graduated from Clarkdale High School in 1936 and have lived, worked and subsequently retired in Cottonwood ever since this date.
While her actual birthday is Oct. 31, the celebration and family dinner was Nov. 3, to accommodate travel plans.
In attendance were sons Bob (with wife Ann), Don (and his wife Sherry), both from Flagstaff. Son Fred arrived from Montana and son Richard came in from Mississippi. Daughter Susan arrived from Phoenix and daughter Cheryl came over from Montana.
Also in attendance were grandson David (with wife Kathy) and great-grandsons Kendall and Matthew.
A smaller group of relatives, including son Don McDonald, who sent the story to the Daily Sun, celebrated with the couple Oct. 31 at the Cottage Place in Flagstaff.
Local Girl Scouts work on Peace Garden
Several Girl Scout troops in Flagstaff -- 1463, 2680, 2547 -- recently partnered with the NAU School of Forestry on a Peace Garden in the NAU Centennial Forest. They planted a ceremonial tree to celebrate 95 years of Girl Scouting and the start of an educational Peace Garden.
Girl Scouts will continue building the peace garden and educational walk with the help and participation of NAU Forestry students in spring 2008.
