State receives federal grant to fight meth abuse

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona has received a three-year, $8.3 million federal grant to help fight against methamphetamine abuse in the state.

The money will support the expansion and enhancement of meth treatment and recovery services through drug courts. That will mean more options for substance-abuse treatment and recovery, including faith-based services. Twelve drug courts and two tribal communities in the state will benefit from the grant.

Expansion of the drug courts was one of the top recommendations that came out of a plan released last spring by Gov. Janet Napolitano's Methamphetamine Task Force, convened to respond to the drug's grip on Arizona communities.

The task force reports that meth-related hospital admissions in the state jumped 20 percent from 2004 to 2005, and the drug is the fifth most popular among Arizona residents 12 and older.
