NAU joins pledge to reduce global warming emissions

Northern Arizona University President John Haeger will join more than 250 other college and university presidents in formally committing to reduce and eventually eliminate NAU's global warming emissions.

The American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment is scheduled for adoption June 11 and June 12 at a summit of higher education leaders in Washington, D.C. In January, Haeger became a charter signatory of the climate commitment, created as an avenue for university leaders to define and address the challenges of climate change. By being an early signer, Haeger has assumed a role in the group's leadership circle, which will eventually include up to 25 university and college presidents who will become the public face and lead supporters of the program.

"Northern Arizona University is a leader in climate change research and curriculum, and through collaborative efforts throughout campus we are assessing ways to reduce our own greenhouse emissions," Haeger said. "We are pleased to officially commit to developing the diversity of skills needed to reverse global warming."

The Presidents Climate Commitment is the first effort by any major group to set climate neutrality-not just a reduction-as its target. This undertaking by America's colleges and universities is inspired by efforts like the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, the U.S. Climate Action Partnership and other collective efforts by states and businesses, according to an NAU Public Affairs press release.

Road construction projects continue around Flagstaff

The Arizona Department of Transportation reminds motorists of the ongoing construction on the East Flagstaff Traffic Interchange Project:

U.S. HIGHWAY 89: All traffic has been switched over to the temporary detour while crews begin to improve the existing Highway 89 roadway. The well-marked detour will remain in place through fall 2007.

INDUSTRIAL DRIVE: Industrial Drive is now open between Nestle Purina Avenue and Huntington Drive.

In other projects:

INTERSTATE 40: Crews will be restricting one lane along Interstate 40 west of Interstate 17 to perform paving work. Motorists should expect delays in both eastbound and westbound lanes. Repaving at on and off ramps may require well-marked, temporary detours Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
